Eating & Body Image Single Session Intervention

Focused psychological support. One 90-minute session.

Single Session Intervention (SSI) for Eating Disorders & Body Image

A Single Session Intervention (SSI) is a focused, 90-minute psychology session designed to help you understand and work on one specific difficulty related to eating, body image or your relationship with yourself.

Rather than trying to address everything at once, we identify what is keeping you stuck, understand the psychological patterns contributing to the problem, and work together on practical strategies you can continue using after the session.

The aim isn’t to solve everything in 90 minutes.

It’s to help you leave with greater understanding, a different way of approaching the problem, and a clear next step forward.

What can we work on?

Your session is personalised around the difficulty that is most relevant to you.

This may include:

  • Body image — feeling unhappy, preoccupied or critical about your appearance

  • Self-worth — feeling that your worth depends heavily on your weight, shape, eating or achievements

  • Self-criticism — experiencing a harsh inner voice or feeling that you're never good enough

  • Perfectionism — setting extremely high standards around food, appearance, exercise or other areas of life

  • Difficult emotions — using food, restriction or other behaviours to cope with uncomfortable emotions

  • Eating rules and rigid thinking — feeling stuck in strict ideas about what, when or how you “should” eat

  • Motivation and change — knowing you want things to be different but feeling unsure how to begin

  • Coping with uncertainty or change — using control around food, exercise or appearance when other areas of life feel uncertain

  • Social comparison and social media — noticing that comparison or online content is affecting how you feel about yourself or your body

You do not need to know which area you need to work on before your appointment. We can identify this together.

What happens during the 90-minute session?

1. Understand what's keeping you stuck

We start by identifying the particular problem you would like help with and looking at the thoughts, emotions and behaviours that may be maintaining it.

Instead of trying to cover every aspect of your relationship with food or your body, we'll identify one area where change may make a meaningful difference.

2. Learn

You'll develop a better understanding of the psychology behind the difficulty you're experiencing.

Depending on your individual situation, this might involve understanding how self-worth, perfectionism, body checking, avoidance, comparison, self-criticism, emotional regulation or rigid thinking can contribute to eating and body-image difficulties.

The goal is to help you make sense of why the pattern keeps happening—not simply tell you to stop doing it.

3. Do

Understanding something is only the beginning.

A significant part of the session is spent actively working on the problem together.

Depending on your needs, this might involve a behavioural experiment, developing more flexible responses to eating or body-image thoughts, working with your inner critic, diversifying your sources of self-worth, practising emotion-regulation strategies, challenging perfectionistic rules, or developing a different response to body-image distress.

4. Develop your plan

Before finishing, we'll translate what you've learned into a practical plan.

You'll identify what you want to practise, what might get in the way, and how you can respond when the old pattern appears again.

You'll leave with a personalised strategy to continue applying after the session.
